It is not a myth - they do exist!

The long-haired Shiba Inu, most often referred to as the woolly Shiba, is more common than you may think. It is theorized that this recessive gene originates from the Kawakami-ken, one of the original breeds that was cross-bred into what would eventually be known as the Shiba Inu.

While not recognized in the competitive circuit, this trait has long-been a part of the Shiba Inu bloodline. Bloodlines across the world carry this gene, resulting in the occasional woolly in a litter. While the woolly may not be recognized as competition breed standard, they are very much Shiba Inu and are the perfect companion pet.

And no, they do not shed more than the standard coat Shiba Inu - their hair is just longer!
